Comprehensive Sex education does not weaken an abstinence message. In fact it empower youths use to act in there own best interest the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Adolescence, said "encouraging abstinence and urging better use of contraception are compatible goals." (7).
How accurate is the information in abstinence-only sex education programs?
A study order by congress found that abstinence only did not prevent youths from having sex (9 ).
Congressman Jim Moran, D-Va. said "Our tax dollars should be used to fund programs that benefit the public good, not on unsuccessful, often counter-productive, ideologically-driven boondoggles," and continued "Recent studies have shown abstinence-only programs are not working - in some cases even leading to higher levels of sexual activity. We know comprehensive sex ed is effective; it has a proven track record. Federal funding should be going to programs that work, not those shown to be failing our youth. I look forward to working with Chairman Obey on this important issue."(10 ).
Virginity Pledges taken by teens, pledges that the teen will wait for marriage to have sex don't prevent teens from having sex, according to research, and they are less likely to use protection when they do have sex (11 ).
In 2009 Pope Benedict XVI visited Africa, and claimed condoms may exacerbate the spread of AIDS. The Journal said the pontiff "publicly distorted scientific evidence to promote Catholic doctrine." and noted "When any influential person, be it a religious or political leader, makes a false scientific statement that could be devastating to the health of millions of people, they should retract or correct the public record," (12 ).
Eliminating poverty and education especially in the encouragement of condom use are more important factors in preventing the spread of AIDS than preventing promiscuity(13 ).
The Washington Post said on June 29, 2003 a third of former Bush's global AIDS was ear marked for the promotion of abstinence(14 ).
