Questionable degrees of connection

In 2008 horrific terror attacks happened in Mumbai India. Multi millionaire and one of the most wanted men in the world Dawood Ibrahim is believed to be involved. Mr Ibrahim at the head of the crime syndicate "D-Company", and has been tied to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) (7 ).

The D-Company has strong links to the Militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba, and its former head Dawood Ibrahim, also has ties to al Qaeda (8 ).

The Pakistan's ISI allows Dawood to keep his smuggling routes as long as he is working with them.He is believed to own shopping malls, luxury homes, and shipping and trucking lines in Pakistan (9 ).

The ISI is also involved with drug trafficking according to the (Defense Intelligence Agency) DIA and the CIA (10 ).

The ISI maintain links with terrorist organizations like LeT and JuD. An Ex US officials insist that Pakistan can not have a policy of "selective counter-terrorism.". A co-chaired the inter-agency committee of the Obama Administration Bruce Riedel ,said "But the complexity, the problem is that ISI continues to have relations with groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, with whatever its new name is and with the Afghan Taliban. It is a very complex picture. It's selective counter-terrorism. What we need is uniform counter-terrorism,"(11 ).

In 2009 Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari claimed the CIA and the ISI created the Taliban, he said "I think it was part of your past and our past, and the ISI and CIA created them together,"(12 ).

A CIA official said Hameed Gul, aformer chief of the ISI of supporting the Taliban (13 ).

American intelligence and military services are tied to the ISI (14 ).

chronic problem

It was claimed USA Patriot Act and other War On Terror practices are needed to gather information. Yet the same Chronic problem exist as it did before September 11 2001, the information is there, but its not being properly utilized

On November 5 2009 Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan allegedly went on a shooting rampage in Ft Hood Texas that killed 13 people. He had communicated with Yemen-based radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki (15 ). Hasan had exchanged more than a dozen email with Anwar Awlaki and communicated with radical Islamic web sites (16).

Appearance and his behavior grew less and less military. He openly challenged the mission in Iraq. He asked Anwar al-Awlaki if a us soldier would be justified in killing a comrade, this was deemed as an acceptable part of his duties as a psychiatrist. When he as offically asked about his increasingly extremist views he refused to answer (17 ).

A review showed short comings of DOD in handling people Like Hasan U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates speaking on the need to fight self-radicalization he said "burdened by 20th century processes and attitudes mostly rooted in the Cold War," and noted "Our counterintelligence procedures are mostly designed to combat an external threat such as a foreign intelligence service," and wanted more focus "on internal threats." (18 ). The review recommended that "several officers" be referred to Army for possible punishment for not properly supervising Major Hasan (19 ).

On Christmas day 2009 their was an attempt to down an Detroit bound airliner. The Suspect Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab communicated with al-Qaida. President Obama said "There was a mix of human and systemic failures that contributed to this potential catastrophic breach of security," (20 ).

The American Intelligence community had information that the Christmas bomber had ties to "Yemen-based extremists" a month before he tried to detonate a bomb on the plane. Though they say "his father never said he was a jihadist," they had evidence that Al Qaeda was planning a Christmas day a attack and an unnamed Nigerian was going to take part (21 ).

Indeed the father has warned the US about his sons extreme religious views (22 ). The alleged attempted bomber met with the same Muslim cleric (23 ).

Mr al-Awlaki

Imam Anwar al-Awlaki is a US Citizen who now "lives" in Yemen. He was associated with the 9/11 hijackers Nawaf al-Hazmi, Khalid al-Mihdhar and Hani Hanjour. When Muslims denounced the FT Hood Shooter he attacked them by posting on his web site "committed treason against the Muslim ummah [community] and have fallen into hypocrisy". (24 ). I used quotations on lives because there is a question mark on if he survived a December 2009 attack by Yemen forces (25 ).
