As many as 2.7 million Jews died in the "death camps" (1 ).

The time of the killing of the "two million" was between June and July of 1941 and the end of 1943 (2 ).

The Nazi regime started the first concentration camp in Dachau in 1933. It was used as a Detention center for political opponents Communists, Socialists, Social Democrats, and trade unionists. Though Jews were strongly targeted they were by no means the only ones targeted, A few of other groups targeted Gypsies, author or artist who's work was deemed subversive homosexuals (3 ).

As World War II neared its end, the last 47 Jews in Chelmno concentration camp wrote a collective will ``Armed soldiers stand around us. What can I do? Please tell my brothers Yitzhak Lazer and Mordechai Motek and my sister Hava in Moscow of my fate. I have another sister, Regina, in America. Please tell them my last wish before I die ... to avenge my death and the death of all the many Jews who were murdered like animals,'' wrote 16-year-old Berek Himelfarb. Berek was among the last to die of the more than 300,000 Jews murdered by the Nazis at Chelmno in west-central Poland. the will, signed by 10 of the prisoners, was written Jan.9, 1944, eight days before they were murdered. The 7th Division of the 1st Byelorussian Front liberated the camp three days later on Jan. 20. (4 ).

Commandant of the (Chelmno ) camp SS general Wilhelm Koppe was captured in West Germany in 1960(5 ).

Koppe hid out under a false name and had a high position with a Bonn Industrial firm (6 ).

Auschwitz's original purpose was a slave labor camp. The gas chambers were added to Auschwitz toward the end of 1941.(7 ).

Rudolf Hoess was commandant at Auschwitz in June of 1941. Then Auschwitz was still a small camp. He was informed that Auschwitz would be used for the extermination of the Jews because of it's suitability as a railway junction. In July of that same year Hoess received further instructions from Eichmann, over the extermination plan. Hoess visited Treblinka to study gassing methods, he came back with a poor opinion, he decided to experiment with his own with 'Zyklon B' crystals, which he used effectively soon after Eichmann's visit (8 ).
