Music helps youths negotiate adolescence, on their way to adulthood. Often their choice of music troubles there parents, as their parents music troubled their parents. The uncomfortable issues raised in music can act as a spring board for parents to add their input on the issues raised. The fate of the listeners of this uncomfortable troubling problem music? The same as the former listeners of problem music. Normal adulthood (1).

Music is important to adolescents and allows them allows to
(a) portray an 'image' to the outside world
(b) satisfy their emotional needs(2 ).

A study said even fans who worship heavy metal "Preference for HM music and worshipping were not directly related to suicidal risk for adolescents."(3 ).

It was discovered that rap and heavy metal listeners had more turmoil with parents. When variables where controlled the difference disappeared (4 ).

Researcher said about hard rock, hip hop and punk "Listening to problem music did not precede self-injurious thoughts. Problem music is associated with self-injurious thoughts and behaviors, but this relationship is mediated by other factors and the former does not seem to cause the latter."(5 ).

A researcher noted, "Adolescents use music listening, in contrast, to directly engage with issues of identity. Solitary music listening, I have argued, is a fantasy ground for exploring possible selves. Sometimes this involves pumping oneself up with images of power and conquest; other times it may involve fantasies of merger and rescue by an idealized lover; yet other times, it may involve intense worry about personal shortcomings and their significance for one's future(6 ).
