Violence and the media the lack of cause and effect?

What's the impact of media on the general population? Often watch dog groups and researchers use overly simplified theories. I also have seen numerous studies that use loaded words and phrases, all the while the researcher imply they are unbiased. I have seen certain media referred to as "poison", by "unbiased" researchers. This brings to mind something where the overwhelming majority of its consumers will suffer ill effects, Solely by the consumption of the subject at hand.
