When the Hitler regime started to realize it might be defeated they began covering up Nazis atrocities. Sure Hitler has spoken about Jews in Mein Kampf, but this would only prove motive. The real evidence had to be destroyed. Auschwitz was evacuated in January 1945, before the allies took the camp. The Nazi force evacuation Auschwitz and death march away from advancing allied troops. Why waste the troops and what resources you have marching sick and malnourished inmates away from advances troops. Also The SS ordered inmates burned alive in barracks and warehouses. The Nazi formed "Death Brigades" to open mass graves and destroy the evidence of the bodies. Were allied troops this bloodthirsty? (1 ).

A former prisoner of the Nazis Paul Bergmann, a Prague historian told of his experiences with the forced Nazi death Marches "When a concentration camp was in danger of being liberated by one of the Allied armies, the inmates were sent on death marches to another camp where the murder of innocents continued at a break-neck pace." And continued "With the approach of the Russians, we were evacuated to Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria on Jan. 18, 1945. Those not killed during the death march were systematically slaughtered at Mautlausen"(2 ).

With allies advancing Heinrich Himmler order the gassing stopped Auschwitz-Birkenauon November 2 1944. On November 26 of the he ordered the removal and destruction of evidence of the extermination program. Then in the middle of January of the next year the last of the crematoriums at Auschwitz-Birkenau was destroyed (3 ).

On January 17 1945 the last roll call of the complex Auschwitz-Birkenau counted 48,340 men and 18,672 women. The next day thousands prisoners where marched to other camps farther away from the advancing Russian troops. The SS also burned records were burned, transportation list of all those who had been directly herded into the gas chamber, the records of the hospital, records of the camp hospital, the clothing and personal effects of the prisoners was also burned. On January 19 the burned all but six barracks. They left behind prisoners too ill to move(4 ).

The Germans left behind 7,000 prisoners a few doctors and nurses, the evil work at Auschwitz had ended but the work would continued at camps like Dora and Nordhausen and other camps in the heart of Germany (5 ).
