The following is from the Interrogation of Oswald Pohl, who was chief of the SS Main Office Economics and Administration.
Q What was done following Himmler's order in the fall of 1944? Were any of the gas chambers destroyed that were for the extermination of Jews?
A. Well, the order concerning the banning of all extermination of Jews was given by Himmler in March, 1945. That is when he said no more Jews were to be exterminated and that the Camp Commandant would be responsible in case a single one of them disappeared.
Q. How do you reconcile that statement with the statement of Hoess that the mass killing had ceased late in 1944 on order of Himmler?
A. About that I don't know. This is the first time I have heard about it, that Himmler gave the order in the fall of 1944, to stop all such measures (9 ).

A leading Einsatzgruppen generals Erich von dem Bach-Zelewski, told Himmler after seeing the killing of 100's of Jews " Look at the eyes of the men in this Kommando, how deeply shaken they are! These men are finished [fertig] for the rest of their lives. What kind of followers are we training here? Either neurotics or savages!" (10 ).

When a higher up and Chief of Police on the Central Russian front Lieutenant General Erich von dem Bach-Zelewski was asked how he was able to reconcile the murder of 90,000 Jews by one small Einsatzgruppe, he said, "I am of the opinion that when for years, for decades, the doctrine is preached that the Slav is an inferior race and the Jew not even human, then such an outcome is inevitable."(11 ).

After being committed to an SS hospital for a nervous break down and nightmares. Doctors at the hospital reported that Bach-Zelewski was having hallucinations connected with shooting of Jews. Bach-Zelewski asked Himmler if the killing of the Jews could stopped. Himmler said the killing was ordered by Hitler and if he should persist concerning himself with the Jews it would have dire personal consequences (12 ).
