Terrorism on religious grounds isn't new or solely based in one religious belief. Aruna Gnanadason of the World Council of Churches said "all religions have at their center a commitment to peace ... [or] a spirituality of nonviolence," British Broadcaster noted that all religions "sanctioned violence to protect or promote their own sectarian interests," (5 ).

War (violence) and religion? The Balkan war in the 1990's had extremely religious tones in it. It can't be ignored just because Muslims were not the sole aggressor (6 ).

A survey of Muslims worldwide showed that widespread religiosity "does not translate into widespread support for terrorism," of the Muslims polled only seven percent condone attacks on the USA (7 ).

A two day national session of Jamiat-Ulema-I-Hind (JUH) at the Deoband school of Islam denounced terrorism and drew a clear line between "jihad" and terrorism they passed a declaration that said "jihad basically a constructive phenomenon, terrorism was based on destruction alone. Jihad is permitted only for restoring peace and is a fundamental right of a human being"(9 ).

The Darul Uloom Deoband is an Islamic seminary in northern India that is 150 and its influence spans the globe the declaration also said "Islam sternly condemns all kinds of oppression, violence and terrorism. It has regarded oppression, mischief, rioting and murdering among severest sins and crimes." Maulana Marghoobur Rahman, a rector of Darul Uloom Deoband, told reporters "There is no place for terrorism in Islam." (10 )
