We think we know the image of pre Civil War and Civil War America. The progressive north against the country "gentlemen" of the south. To the north was freedom to the south was slavery and oppression. President Lincoln spearheaded drive the effort to free slaves. We see it now with the clarity, self righteousness, and over simplification of hindsight. Our hind sight isn't always accurate, though.
