In response to what was perceived as a Marxist threat(see Angola). South Africa and the CIA had a joint invasion of Angola. The Angolan government called on help to repel these invaders (1 ). Nelson Mandela was released from prison in February 1990. He was imprisoned for almost 28 years because of a CIA tip to South African authorities were he was at. The CIA and National Security Agency provided South African intelligence service about Mandela's whereabouts (2 ). Richard Nixon changed the American tone of South Africa apartheid. Former presidents condemned it, the Nixon Administration seemed to accept it. In 1970, the US abstained from a United Nations vote to strengthen arms embargoes against South Africa (3 ). |
