Attacks on the American public
In 1953 the CIA got a $400,000.00 contract Eli Lilly to make and supply LSD. This was done under as part of the CIA's MK-Ultra mind control program. The CIA experimented on US Soldiers until 1970(11 ).
MK-Ultra wasn't the only experiment there were US government used chemical agents to induce mind control. Others were Bluebird , and Artichoke, but MkUltra is the most infamous (12 . )
It's believed that MK-Ultra cost $25 million. It also involved 185 non governmental researchers, and 80 institutions. It was headed by Dr. Sidney Gottlieb(13 ).
Who was a target? Anyone. A CIA document dated May 8 1973 mentions a 1963 account of scientist administering mind or personality altering drugs to "unwitting subjects" (14 ).
An Operative said "We tested these drugs in bars, in restaurants, in so-called massage parlors, any place where there was a drink and people were eating and drinking." (15 ).
MK-Ultra took place in mental hospitals, was this planned so if victim told about the experiments they would be doubted. Also the CIA destroyed many of the files that related to this program. The ghost of this program still haunts us. It appears that many torture techniques used on American service personnel in the 1950's. In 1957 the US Air Force published a chart of Korean War torture methods as part of a study. The chart has been recycled according to New Yorker staffer Jane Mayer, and author of the "The Dark Side." she said "The recycled chart is the latest and most vivid evidence of the way Communist interrogation methods that the United States long described as torture became the basis for interrogations both by the military at the base at Guanatanmo Bay, Cuba, and by the Central Intelligence Agency," (16 ).
Between 1975 and 1975 people tried to learn the scope of these programs. Senate committees, journalists, and CIA administrators uncovered part of the truth, because the CIA had destroyed many of the relevant files. In 1998 a civil law suit was brought by surviving members of these experiments, and resulted in a cash settlement. (17 ) Another thing that these experiments cost was the trust of the American people.
